Episode Topic; Learning True Worship.
My first memories of worship are of my father gathering us around the television in our whole house in a little town called ankle every time he finds and buys a new “worship music” tape or CD by various (usually American) popular music companies. It usually felt like Christmas because it was made into an event. He would then go on to listen to those recordings basically on repeat every day until pretty much every member of his household knew every song on both sides of the tape or the whole CD playlist by heart. That was my introduction to what I understood as worship. It was in one of those sing-along sessions in our home that I first learned about the tutor of this episode, Mr Ron Kenoly. Over the years the sing-alongs kind of died down but what never did was my understanding that my father loved to worship his God. I would watch him in church services anywhere we went together and I could tell that he was lost and focused on no one else in the room but his Father in Heaven. It was one of the things I loved about him. Even now, one of my FAVORITE memories of him is of him seating on his favourite chair in the living room, directly facing the TV, on Sunday evenings after church when everyone is upstairs taking a nap, he’s sat there listening and singing along to the praise and worship playlist shows on the Christian channels. His favourites were usually the South African ones in their languages which he didn’t understand. I don’t know why but the South Africans do have a blessing of music don’t they? excellent singers and musicians. Also, I guess it’s like they say that music transcends language. I remember some days I would be standing behind him on the staircase watching just along and feeling grateful. I didn’t know why at the time or that it would come to be such a precious memory of him for me one day but I just did. Now I know why.
My mother on the other hand was mesmerising whenever the “Praise” part of the “worship segments” of church services was on. (which is usually when the faster-paced songs are being played and require dancing) in their absence, I’ve found that I love Both the “praise” and the “worship” segments equally. You’ll understand the reason for my quotation marks after you listen to the sermon.
I was led to this exact sermon 2 years ago and was absolutely shocked to learn that worshipping God has very little to do with singing. I listened to this sermon at the time half in disbelief because it was so contrary to what Churchianity had taught me for YEARS. It was so impactful that I literally searched it out by name last week to listen again, and now it’s time to share it. I hope that it blesses you as much as it has me.

Topic Role Model: David.
Ahhh King David, warrior, psalmist, grandpa of Jesus. God’s own choice of king and unofficial chief musician who from when he was a kid in the fields with the cattle maintained the same heart posture on the throne in a palace. What a model indeed. His worship is testified of by God Himself is definitely the secret of his greatness. There are many lessons to be learnt from his own. Yes there was singing and dancing involved but his obedience and repentant heart were the true keys to his worship.
May we all have the testimony of true worship before our God.
